A PhD position in neuromorphic engineering is available in the context of EU Project “Coronet”, which will provide theoretical and technological foundations for future biohybrid and brain-machine interface devices. The intended research topic is biomimetic "in silico" networks of spiking neurons and plastic synapses that exhibit complex spontaneous dynamics at multiple spatial and temporal scales. Both microscopic components (such as neurons and synapses) and mesoscopic components (dynamic models of recurrent network modules) are to be realized in CMOS technology.
The ideal applicant will have a Master degree (or equivalent) in Microelectronic Engineering or a closely related field, a strong interest in biomimetic VLSI technology, and prior experience in VLSI design and mixed-signal CMOS circuits.
The earliest possible starting date is 1 January 2011. Salary is dependent on experience and conforms to German public service regulations [E13 starting at € 3064 per month]. The position is initially for two years, with the possibility of being extended.
The research program will be based in Magdeburg, but will require regular travel to project partners in Dresden, Rome, and Zurich.
