Because she regards a technical background as being important for good science journalism, in 1999 she founded a course at the University of California at Berkeley called Writing for the Technical Press. Taught through the College of Engineering, the course was only open to students doing science and engineering degrees.
She subsequently ran the undergraduate communication and professional skills programme in the Electrical and Electronic Engineering Department at Imperial College London
She now teaches technical writing and communication to more than 1200 students annually in the UCL Engineering, runs a minor in Strategic Thinking in Engineering and Technology and teaches a course in Tech Journalism.
